Defence Research & Development Organisation (DRDO) works under Department of Defence Research and Development of Ministry of Defence. DRDO dedicatedly working towards enhancing self-reliance in Defence Systems and undertakes design & development leading to production of world class weapon systems and equipment in accordance with the expressed needs and the qualitative requirements laid down by the three services.
DRDO is working in various areas of military technology which include aeronautics, armaments, combat vehicles, electronics, instrumentation engineering systems, missiles, materials, naval systems, advanced computing, simulation and life sciences. DRDO while striving to meet the Cutting edge weapons technology requirements provides ample spinoff benefits to the society at large thereby contributing to the nation buliding.
Naval Research and Development
The Directorate of Naval Research and Development (DNRD) was established in 1972 as Directorate of Naval Science and Technology. Subsequently the name was changed to its present name. The Directorate was further supplemented with NSTL and NPOL Project Cells in 1983 and 1984 respectively.
The DNRD provides interface for the naval research laboratories of DRDO with users, i.e., the Indian Navy , Defence production agencies, and other external agencies including academic institutions. It also acts as a facilitator for transfer of technology developed in the Naval research laboratories of DRDO to the Navy through the production agencies.
DNRD, at DRDO HQrs, is a technical DIRECTORate controlling three labs viz NPOL, NSTL and NMRL. These labs exclusively undertake developmental work related to Navy. DNRD is also Member Secretary of Naval Research Board (NRB) set up to encourage and support basic research in naval technology.
Areas of Work
BROAD ACTIVITIES OF DIRECTORATE OF NAVAL R&D
1.The Directorate of Naval R&D is the nodal agency and facilitator for effective interaction between Navy (user) and Naval Cluster of Laboratories (Naval Physical Oceanographic Laboratory Kochi, Naval Science & Technological Laboratory Visakhapatnam and Naval Materials Research Laboratory Ambernath). This Dte is also responsible for coordinating/progressing the cases pertaining to the naval cluster labs through corporate and technical Directortes at DRDO HQrs, Integrated Finance, Public & Private Organisations.
2.The Director Naval R&D is a member of various committees set up by Navy for research activities/equipment induction such as PMC of WESEE, Naval Equipment Policy Committee & Weapon Sensor Management Committee and Underwater Research Advisory Committee.
3.The Director Naval R&D is also a member of committees on Marine/Underwater Research at National Institute of Oceanography (NIO), Gol(DIT) Sub-Committee on Strategic Electronics (Underwater) and governing council of National Centre for Antarctic and Ocean Resources (Ministry of Earth Sciences).
4.The Directorate is responsible for pursuing basic research and Marine/Naval technologies by academic institutions through Naval Research Board. The Director (Naval Research & Development) is the Member Secretary of Naval Research Board.
