The mission of NSWC Panama City Division is to conduct research, development, test and evaluation, in-service support of mine warfare systems, mines, naval special warfare systems, diving and life support systems, amphibious/expeditionary maneuver warfare systems, other missions that occur primarily in coastal (littoral) regions and to execute other responsibilities as assigned by Commander, Naval Surface Warfare Center.
Since the early 1970s, Naval Surface Warfare Center Panama City Division (NSWC PCD) has been developing unmanned and autonomous systems in support ofsubmarine and submersible hydro-acoustic and propulsor research, torpedo defense, mine countermeasures, amphibious warfare, and special operations surveillance and reconnaissance.
These organic and offboard unmanned vehicles, their sensors, andpayloads will become a force multiplier, allowing U.S. joint and combinedforces to do more with less manpower. NSWC PCD is developing unmanned systems with unprecedented emphasis on smaller, highly deployable systems, reduced total ownership cost, and maximum use ofcommercial off-the-shelf (COTS) technology and advanced autonomy to allow reduced operator workload. In the future, autonomous systems will be vital, allowing cooperating vehicles to communicate with each other, think for themselves, and report back to their operators occasionally with the data they have collected.
Unmanned Systems Engineering and Integration, Autonomous Operations, Joint Interoperability and Common Control
Provides the research, design, development, integration, test, evaluation and implementation of Unmanned Systems payloads on (1) Off the shelf or existing non-developmental Unmanned Underwater Vehicles (UUVs) with limited modifications; (2) Developmental or existing Unmanned Surface Vehicles (USVs) and Unmanned Ground Vehicles (UGVs); (3) Non-developmental (lightweight tactical) Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) in support of the following missions: Mine Warfare (MIW), Amphibious Warfare, Naval Special Warfare (NSW), Diving and Life Support, Underwater Intelligence Surveillance and Reconnaissance (ISR), ISR supporting NSW, and other missions in the Littoral and Riverine environments. Provides common unmanned systems management, mission control, and integration of joint interoperability messaging standards.
Littoral Mission Systems Integration and Modular Mission Packages Certification
Provides for the scientific research and engineering, analysis, and planning support for the modularization of off-board systems in support of the Littoral Warfare mission area except for ASW mission modules. Provides for the certification of all Littoral Warfare mission packages. Expertise includes the packaging and handling of off-board system hardware, tactics development and mission planning for simultaneous operation of littoral mission systems, system integration of legacy and emerging littoral mission systems, seaframe integration of off-board systems, and development of a mission systems integrated communications network, and distributed engineering testing, validation and verification of all littoral mission packages’ computing environment.
