The Oceanic Platform of the Canary Islands (PLOCAN) is a general marine science and technology mobilisation initiative that seeks to obtain the international socioeconomic business competitiveness derived from access to the oceanic space.
The plan is to construct and operate an oceanic platform to install a group of experimentation facilities and laboratories, located on the border of the continental platform, with which to initiate stable oceanic occupation and operations and from where it will be possible to access the deep ocean, using and operating, either connected or by remote control, all kinds of vehicles, underwater work machinery and instruments to observe, produce and take advantage of resources, or install underwater facilities at depths at which, up until now, only fuel prospecting and extraction companies have been able to operate. All these objectives would be carried out with sufficient environmental guarantees and in a socially acceptable manner.
This Singular Scientific and Technological Infrastructure (SSTI) has been conceived as an element that would focalise and promote the extensive regional and national capacities that exist, but which, without an initiative of this kind, would not be able to reach the international leadership that this SSTI guarantees.
The proposed infrastructure has a dual nature. On one hand, that of a permanent structure, due to its conception of operative occupation of the ocean space, whilst the fleet of vehicles and underwater work machinery that will be used, tested and developed as a result of its activity give it the character of a national underwater operation instrumental base, thus extending its activities to any part of the ocean where the research groups or companies involved need to work.
Oceanic Platform of the Canary Islands
Type Details: The Oceanic Platform of the Canary Islands (PLOCAN) is a multipurpose technical-scientific service infrastructure that provides support for research, technological development and innovation in the marine and maritime sectors. PLOCAN offers both onshore and offshore experimental facilities and laboratories, operational throughout the whole year thanks to the Canary Islands' excellent climatic conditions. We also have a broad experience in large national marine/maritime projects and several European projects from the 4th to the 7th Framework programs.
The services offered by PLOCAN are as follows:
-An ocean observatory for the continuous and real-time monitoring in fields such as the study of global change and ocean acidification, water-column and deep-sea ecosystems, ocean biogeochemistry and geophysics. It consists of several permanent and mobile systems that interoperate to offer environmental impact monitoring, instrument testing, calibration and validation from shallow waters to the deep seabed.
-A test bed for the research, demonstration and operation of marine technologies, especially those related to marine renewable energy. We provide a robust and secure underwater electric infrastructure to evacuate the generated energy to the power grid connection, and a control centre for data analysis.
-A base for underwater vehicles: we own a series of underwater unmanned state-of-the-art technologies such as gliders, ROVs and AUVs. Besides, we support missions deploying customers´ vehicles. We have a dedicated control room to track the UUVs on real-time and laboratories and warehouses to support the missions´ needs.
-A training platform for researchers, enterprises and pilots for UUVs.
-An innovation hub offering efficient and high quality R&D&I project management services, as well as other user-oriented services such as the processing of permits, transport, customs, etc
