NAVAL OCEANOGRAPHIC OFFICE
For more than 175 years, the Naval Oceanographic Office (NAVOCEANO) has been responsible for providing oceanographic products andservices to all elements within the Department of Defense (DoD).
NAVOCEANO utilizes airborne, surface and subsurface platforms deployed worldwide, remote-sensing satellites and seaborne buoys, to collect data around the world.
Global ocean and littoral data are analyzed on scene and in house by NAVOCEANO experts, who then convert the data into specialized, operationally significant products and services, which are tailored to the warfighters’ needs. Available for warfighters and civilian, national and international customers, these products and services support virtually every type of Fleet operation by providing mission essential information to the warfighter 24 hours-a-day, seven days-a-week.
Comprised of approximately 1,100 military and contractor personnel, NAVOCEANO is the largest subordinate command within the Naval Meteorology and Oceanography Command. From its location at Stennis Space Center, NAVOCEANO oversees the Naval Ice Center in Suitland, Md., and the Fleet Survey Team, also at Stennis Space Center.
The goal of the NAVOCEANO AUV program is to multiply the effectiveness of oceanographic survey ships, allowing survey of larger areas in less time than with the ship alone.
