Rutgers’ Institute of Marine and Coastal Sciences(IMCS) is an oceanographic research institute dedicated to discovering and communicating science about the planet for the benefit of society. The faculty and staff are drawn from various departments within the university, including the Department of Earth and Planetary Sciences, Department of Environmental Sciences, Grant F. Walton Center for Remote Sensing & Spatial Analysis, Department of Ecology, Evolution & Natural Resources, and the Haskin Shellfish Research Laboratory. This diversity has led to major interdisciplinary initiatives ocean science. Since its creation in 1989, IMCS has grown with federal funding from agencies including NOAA, NSF, ONR, and NASA. IMCS is also a leader in science education. Public outreach and K-12 learning is part of the core of IMCS.

IMCS has both an undergraduate and a graduate program. The undergraduate program includes a major in marine science that will prepare students for graduate work in oceanography and many other applied environmental and marine science fields. The graduate program serves as a focus for interdisciplinary studies and research opportunities in estuarine, coast and open-ocean environments. Students can apply for either the Master of Science or Doctor of Philosophy.
