New autonomous robot technology helps identify dangerous limpet mines on a ship, saving humans from doing the dangerous job. Michigan Engineering Associate Professor Ryan Eustice has developed an autonomous robot that conducts optical real-time visual mapping and inspection of a ship's hull. This capability eliminates the need for human intervention and, consequently, dispenses any dangers that might be encountered. Furthermore, Eustice's autonomous robot does away with present day mapping and inspection methods, which are both time-consuming and imprecise.
