Ocean Shelf-Edge Exchange Autonomous Underwater Vehicle Technology programme timetable
Sensors on Autonomous Underwater Gliders

NERC would like to announce the indicative timing of some key dates for the Autonomous Underwater Vehicle (AUV) Technology programme's remaining opportunity. This opportunity will award funding of c. £450k to support four grants that will deliver the 'Sensors on Autonomous Underwater Gliders' component of the programme.

The main aim of the AUV Technology programme is to augment the Ocean Shelf-Edge Exchange research programme's field experiments with an enhanced technology-led programme of science and capability demonstrations using gliders and new sensors.

In particular, these additional activities will test the operation of gliders from shore bases in support of open ocean research and use the glider missions to trial a number of new biochemical sensors (currently under development under the Oceans 2025 programme at the National Oceanography Centre, Southampton) to increase the range of parameters observed by the Ocean Shelf-Edge Exchange research programme.

In addition, the funded activities will broaden the science community that has glider mission experience and will be fully integrated within the Ocean Shelf-Edge Exchange programme.

The timetable for key programme activities going forward is as follows:

  • late September 2011 - Release of an Announcement of Opportunity for grant proposals.
  • 14 October 2011 - A workshop at the National Oceanography Centre, Southampton to:
        i.    ensure that the community is aware of the NERC National Capability - in terms of glider facilities and the biochemical sensors - available to support research;
        ii.    discuss the science challenges and possible approaches to undertake research; and
        iii.    identify potential collaborations and partnerships.
    (nb registration closing date is 7 October)
  • 22 November 2011 - Deadline for grant proposals.

Workshop attendance by scientists who have little or no experience of using gliders is particularly encouraged, as the workshop may provide an opportunity to start to develop collaborations with more experienced scientists. This information is provided in good faith to help researchers prepare to respond to the funding opportunities. However, plans may be subject to change and so timing cannot be guaranteed until formal announcements are issued and proposals invited.
