SQX-500 is a compact, light-weight, Unmanned Underwater Vehicle (UUV) designed for search and survey applications in coastal waters up to 500 meters in depth (1500 and 3000 meters planned). It is a hydro-dynamically stable platform designed for reliable performance and low lifecycle cost.

The vehicle can be equipped with advanced payloads such as 3D bathymetry sonars, bottom classification sounders, sensors, profilers, precision navigation and communication equipment. Its payload architecture can be configured to include a wide variety of standard and / or custom sensors to meet unique requirements. Mission profiles include reconnaissance, survey and precision deployment of various payloads.

SQX-500 is a joint project of the National Research Council of Canada’s Institute for Ocean Technology (NRC-IOT) and Marport Canada Inc.

On December 7 & 8, 2009, Marport Canada performed in-water maneuverability and propulsion tests with the SQX-500 Unmanned Underwater Vehicle (UUV). These tests demonstrated the high maneuverability of the vehicle, achieved through its innovative 3D thrust vectoring propulsion system, as well as its high passive stability. The SQX-500 is capable of not only traveling forward as with traditional underwater vehicles, but also has the ability to turn in place (zero turning radius), hover independent of current or orientation, and traverse sideways or “crab”. Tests were performed at the Fisheries and Marine Institute of Memorial University of Newfoundland.
