Advanced Systems Group
Boston Engineering’s Advanced Systems Group (ASG) is engaged in various technology development programs and is heavily active in the SBIR/STTR programs.  Current customers include ONR, TARDEC, NAVAIR, NAVSEA and Homeland Security S&T.  Current programs include: advancing UXV (Unmanned Vehicles) technologies, advanced AUVs (Autonomous Underwater Vehicles), advanced underwater control surfaces, advanced intelligent UGV (Unmanned Ground Vehicle) payloads, UAV capture and turnaround systems, integrated sensing, high maneuver platforms and more.

BIOSwimmer, a robotic fish.  BIOSwimmer is a biomimetic, autonomous underwater vehicle (AUV) designed for use in many missions including port security, inspection, and maintenance.

Mike Rufo, Director, Principal Engineer and Roboticist for the Advanced Systems Group, stated:  “While it is applicable to many missions, we are currently working closely with BIOSwimmer’s sponsors, the Department of Homeland Security’s Science and Technology Directorate, to apply its unique maneuverability to inspect the more challenging areas of our nation’s harbors. Our Advanced Systems Group has performed extensive research and analysis of biological systems, their kinematics and dynamics.  We have used our specific talents in robotics and controls to translate the way fish swim into an electromechanical system. What we feel is very important, and unique to our work, is that this translation is performed in a fashion that provides tactical relevance.  Our vehicles can carry sensors, perform tasks and missions, and effectively and efficiently interact with human operators to fill real and important capability gaps.”

Acting like a fish also comes from modeling the biological control system. Layering the control, and engineering it as a biological system is laid out, allows ASG to impart behaviors and motions tied closely to a fish, while leveraging existing state-of-the-art, man-made components.
