Organization’s Description:

The Intelligent batteries and smart charging solutions specialists.

ABSL is the ONLY volume manufacturer of Lithium-Ion cells within the United Kingdom and is a world leader in the research, design, development and delivery of power solutions for customers who cannot afford failure.

ABSL offers complete system solutions from the design and development of its own Lithium-ion cells, design of control electronics and SMART communications, assembly of battery packs, to design and assembly of SMART charging systems.

ABSL remains at the forefront of our industry by actively researching and evaluating new portable power technologies. Our worldwide customer base spans the defence, industry comprising Soldier Modernization Programs, Light Armoured Vehicle back-up power, AUV and UUV programs, Robotic concepts and both Commercial and Industrial OEM bespoke programs.

Unmanned Underwater Vehicles (UUVs)

UUVs come in many different sizes.  For example, small vehicles can be used for mine neutralisation.  These require a battery to power their onboard video and sonar equipment, allowing them to be operated via fibre optic cables and be guided to a potential “target” (mine). The battery solution is required to deliver the longest possible mission time and manoeuvrability within the space constraints of the UUV and to retain sufficient charge over long periods of time to guarantee completion of their mission.

On the other hand, large survey UUVs require a much larger energy storage system to provide both  larger energy storage system  and payload power.  A typical large UUV battery may require in excess of 22kWh of stored energy. For this type of requirement ABSL’s modular design approach provides the ideal power system solution, enabling the use of COTs components, fast development time, reduced qualification costs and ease of maintenance.
