Autonomous underwater vehicle – REMUS 600-S
The REMUS 600-S is equipped with a Kongsberg EM 3002 Multibeam Echosounder (MBES) along with NavP and NavLab which will allow its operator to collect high resolution, IHO quality bathymetric data with unmatched navigational accuracy in shallow water.
REMUS 600-S is an AUV specifically designed for survey applications – 600 m and 1500 meter configurations available.
Description
Leveraging our previous experience, Hydroid has developed a field-tested, proven REMUS 600 Survey (REMUS 600-S) AUV. The Kongsberg’s Navigation Processing Suite (NavP) which is used on the HUGIN has been incorporated to improve timing accuracy to 1ms or better and provide complete time synchronization of all onboard sensors. In addition to NavP, the Navigation Laboratory (NavLab) software package is offered to provide customers with a postprocessing software suite that is designed specifically to improve AUV positioning to meet hydrographic standards.
The REMUS technology provides the operator with absolute confidence in performing completely autonomous operations with high levels of data assurance and accuracy. The REMUS 600-S vehicle has long endurance capability and increased payload capacity compared to other AUVs. The vehicle also has a full suite of communications options including Iridium, Wi-Fi, and acoustic communications. An emergency communication system is also included that powers the GPS, Iridium, and the acoustic transponder in the event of a failure or power loss.
The REMUS 600-S includes Hydroid’s flexible Vehicle Interface Program (VIP), common with all REMUS vehicles, that includes the latest developments such as chart based mission programming, vehicle monitoring, and point & click operation.
The VIP will allow the user to plan any mission easily, including standard large area survey missions (mowing the lawn); long, linear transects; ingress/egress transits; narrow channel surveys; and near shore, shallow water surveys. The vehicle control system will automatically adjust the vehicle’s heading as required to keep it on the desired track line, even in a cross-current.
Applications
Features
The combination of recent technological advances give the REMUS 600-S industry leading navigation ability and advanced data handling capabilities. In particular, the addition of the NavP hardware and software, ported from Kongsberg’s HUGIN AUV, allows the REMUS 600-S operator to calculate the position, velocity, and attitude of the vehicle using raw acceleration and angular rate data from the IMU. It also provides a navigation solution that is precisely synchronized to GPS time with an accuracy of 1 ms or better. The NavLab Software enhances NavP by providing a navigation post processing toolbox that makes possible the re-navigation of the real time position solutions calculated in the field. Post processing navigation data with NavLab increases navigational accuracy and integrity.
The REMUS 600-S is equipped with a Kongsberg EM 3002 MBES operating at 300 kHz. It has been previously shown that the EM 3002 MBES can exceed the feature detection requirements of International Hydrographic Organization (IHO) standard S-44 for Order 1a surveys, the IHO specification that requires detection of a feature rising 2 m above the seabed in depths up to 40 m and 10% of the water depth beyond 40 m.
