Job Title Engineer II/Research Engineer
The Applied Ocean Physics and Engineering Department is searching for an Engineer II/Research Engineer to join their team. This is a regular full time position and is eligible for benefits.
The National Deep Submergence Facility is seeking an Electrical Engineer to become an integral part of the team responsible for the operation, maintenance, and design of undersea robotic systems. This will primarily focus on the AUV (Autonomous Underwater Vehicle) Sentry, but will also include work on the ROV (Remotely Operated Vehicle) Jason and hybrid vehicles such as Nereus and other systems currently under development.

Responsibilities include support of vehicle operations, design and upgrade of vehicle systems, development and tracking of documentation, and oceanographic instrumentation development. The candidate must have the ability to work cooperatively and lead in a team environment both on shore and during field operations. The successful candidate will eventually be responsible for all electrical systems on the Sentry AUV, and have an active role in tasking and coordinating other engineers and technicians .
Sea duties include operational and technical support of systems at sea, world-wide. Yearly travel ranges 2-5 months, depending on scheduling, with individual trip lengths of 2-6 weeks. Sentry and the other vehicles are deep ocean submersibles used primarily on oceanographic research cruises on ocean class vessels.
Experience with the following is desired: System and board level design debug and troubleshooting. Analog and digital circuit design, RS-232/485 serial protocols, microcontroller and other programming languages, power electronics, Ethernet protocol, fiber optic data transmission, general oceanographic instrumentation and acoustic navigation. Computing experience, including knowledge of Linux operating systems, C/C++,Python, and Matlab, is desired but not necessary. Oceanographic operations experience is beneficial.
Depending on the successful candidate’s education and background, they may be hired as either an Engineer II or Research Engineer.
Physical Duties for this position include but are not limited to ability to lift up to 50 lbs independently (above shoulder, shoulder to knee and knee to floor), ability to carry under 50lbs. Visual requirements to include depth perception, ability to see peripherally, ability to adjust vision to bring objects into focus, ability to distinguish basic colors. Hearing requirements to include ability to hear and respond to instructions and communicate effectively in loud areas. Occasional prolonged standing/walking, manual dexterity and mobility, use of hands for basic grasping/manipulation, use of hands for fine manipulation, occasional reaching, stooping, bending, kneeling and crouching.
Sea Duty conditions and physical attributions:
May work at least 8 hours per day and, at times in excess of 12 hours per day, 7 days per week. Sleep and work hours can deviate from those on land. May be expected to work on watch schedule (such as 8 hours on and 8 hours off or 12 hours on and 8 hours off) for all or part of a cruise or to work as hours are needed to accomplish the planned work. May need to travel during holidays and for long distances to and from foreign ports. May experience rudimentary living and working conditions, with shared and basic living quarters and laboratories. May experience bad or extreme weather conditions, including heavy seas, winter weather or hot, tropical weather. Work on deck may occur in both hot and cold conditions around the clock. Sea conditions will lead to active ship motion. Should be able to climb steep and vertical ladders and able to enter and exit compartments through hatches, doors, and sills. Should be able to carry heavy gear and participate in the loading and unloading of the ship as well as in the activities on deck and in the labs during the cruise. Shipboard environment may include: confined areas, shared sleeping quarters (berths) and bathroom facilities, small and basic berthing, fixed meal times and basic menus. modest levels of heating, cooling, ventilation, and illumination, limited or no email and internet access and limited off-duty and recreational facilities (library, lounge, movies). May be exposed to potential allergens and irritants, including paint fumes. May experience constant and intermittent loud noises, and slippery and uneven surfaces.
A BS or Masters in Electrical Engineering is desired. Experience with ROVs and submersible systems is a plus. A proven history of relevant experience and accomplishment can substitute for the required academic background. A demonstrated ability to adapt to a wide variety of electrical systems both at sea and in the laboratory is required.

MBARI's Autonomous Systems group is engaged in research efforts to use advanced Artificial Intelligence (AI) techniques to enable Autonomous Underwater Vehicles (AUV http://www.mbari.org/auv/) to be more adaptive and self aware of their resource and goal commitments. Our onboard deliberative system T-REX (http://www.mbari.org/autonomy/TREX/) being used onboard an AUV is based on the sense-deliberate-act paradigm synthesizing new mission plans in response to environmental conditions. T-REX uses a state-of-the-art temporal constraint-based planner originally developed at NASA and flown on a number of space missions including the ongoing Mars Exploration Rovers (MER) mission. All projects are associated with the CANON (http://www.mbari.org/canon/) program and are research centric.
Potential internship opportunities for 2011 include working on Constraint-based Planning, Machine Learning and Spatial Statistics. Potential projects are along the lines of:
1. Automated Planning: Dealing with discrete resources for planning within the constraint-based planning framework reflecting the consumables onboard an AUV. Modeling and integrating the use of these resources within the plans synthesized by TREX is an important problem for these resource restricted platforms which work in harsh environments.
2. Automated Planning: Using constraint-based temporal planning techniques using coarse grained plan representation to coordinate multiple assets (robots, ships, aircraft fly-bys) for oceanographic field experiments.
3. Machine Learning: Synthesis of multiple Hidden Markov Models (HMMs) for discovering unstructured and dynamic features in the coastal ocean is critical to make optimal use of the platform at sea. Currently T-REX uses only a single model; interrupting plan execution to chase multiple hypothesis at sea by an AUV is the core of the effort.
4. Machine Learning: Techniques in parameterizing incoming data streams from heterogenous sources for event response. Such data will be used for tagging by mixed human and automated mechanisms for detection triggers of dynamic, episodic and non-deterministic features in the coastal ocean. Techniques popularized by Amazon's Mechanical Turk in the general area of Folksonomy will be used for identifying such features for eventual investigation by autonomous robots.
5. Spatial Statistics: Model building of dynamic ocean features which incorporate space and time and doing so onboard a resource limited robot with implications for adaptive sampling.

Undersea Vehicles Engineer
The National Institute for Undersea Science and Technology’s (NIUST) Undersea Vehicle Technology Center (UVTC) at the University of Southern Mississippi invites applications for the position of Undersea Vehicle Systems Engineer. The successful applicant will be a key member of a small team of innovative engineers and technicians that operate and maintain UVTC’s Autonomous Undersea Vehicles (AUV) and remotely operated vehicle (ROV). UVTC is responsible for creating new undersea vehicle technologies through innovative designs or improvements to existing technologies such as development of new sensors, integration of new navigation systems, or design and implementation of novel techniques or methodologies. The NIUST vehicles are equipped with multibeam echosounders and inertial navigation systems and are in the process of being fitted with other sensors for characterizing the seafloor environment in water depths up to 2,200m. The work location will be at the new undersea vehicle lab/shop at the University of Mississippi in Oxford, Mississippi. Field work is conducted on ocean-going vessels at various US coastal locations. The applicant must be proficient in the Windows and LINUX environments, and must be familiar with micro-controllers and real-time operating systems and computer-based communications. Applicants must be self-motivated, well-organized, fluent in English and must have a demonstrated record of communications skills and meticulous attention to detail. This position will require a considerable amount of time at sea and the applicant must be willing and physically able to travel for extended periods of time and on vessels of all sizes. Additional consideration will be given to applicants with specialized experience including acoustic mapping systems, robotic systems, data processing packages such as CARIS or MB-Systems, and general oceanographic experience. Because much of the field work will be conducted on US government ships with security restrictions, applicants should be US citizens or have permanent resident alien status.
Salary will be commensurate with the applicant’s level of education, qualifications and level of accomplishment. This is a regular full time position, contingent upon continuing availability of funds for NIUST or similar projects. Professor or Associate Professor in Ocean and Offshore Engineering - Ref No LAS 165/10 Senior Lecturer (Level C), Marine and Offshore Systems - Ref No LAM 164/10 The National Centre for Maritime Engineering and Hydrodynamics offers a suite of specialist degreesin naval architecture, ocean engineering, marine and offshore systems and MPhil and PhD degrees by research. The National Centre also operates an extensive suite of research facilities including a towing tank, model test basin, cavitation tunnel, circulating water channel, diesel spray chamber and computing cluster.
