Dr Stephen Wood on Bluefin-21 Autonomous Underwater Vehicles (AUVs)

When the news broke out that the missing Malaysia Flight MH370 search team was deploying a Bluefin-21 Autonomous Underwater Vehicle (AUV) in the Indian Ocean to locate plane debris, we knew we had to share our knowledge of this high-tech instrument. Florida Institute of Technology’s Department of Marine and Environmental Systems actually owns and operates two similar Bluefin-21 AUVs for student and faculty use.

First, we constructed a post on FIT’s Facebook page asking the community for any questions regarding the Bluefin vehicles.

 
Then we took these questions to Dr. Stephen Wood, FIT’s resident ocean engineering and Bluefin-21 expert, to get the inside scoop in the first ever “Ask a Professor” video:
