The Oceanic Platform of the Canary Islands, PLOCAN, hosted during the second half of July 2012 the third edition of the Underwater Gliders Summer School for two weeks on Gran Canaria. Students, teachers, institutes and universities from several European countries, as well as underwater glider and sensor leading manufacturers for ocean monitoring and data collection joined this edition.
The Chancellor of the University of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, José Regidor, and PLOCAN’s director, Octavio Llinás, opened the event, whose main goal is to provide a full overview and the operating basics of such specific unmanned underwater vehicles.
This edition was joined by a group of fourteen students from Portugal, Cape Verde, Sweden and Spain, with the collaboration and active participation of seventeen leading companies in the field of marine observation instruments (Teledyne Webb Research, i-Robot, Liquid Robotics, ACSA-Alcen, Bluefin Robotics, Teledyne RDI, Nortek, Contros, Rockland Scientific, Seabird Electronics, Turner Designs, Wetlabs, AADI, INNOVA Oceanografia Litoral, EMS, Grafinta and SIDMAR). The educational content included theoretical and practical sessions in lab and open waters of Gran Canaria.
Nowadays PLOCAN owns several underwater glider technologies that have been handled by students during the school as examples of the different options that market currently offers.
